What is Water Backflow?

Water backflow occurs when water in piping systems flows opposite to its intended direction, potentially causing contamination of clean water supplies. This reversal can be the result of backpressure or back-siphonage and poses a significant threat not just to the quality of water but also to public health. Imagine sipping water from a cup. Your drinking action relies on a pressure difference—your mouth creates a vacuum that draws water up the straw. Now, if for some reason that vacuum pressure is suddenly stronger than the water pressure in your cup, you'd have water flowing back into it. In plumbing, such an occurrence can introduce contaminants from industrial fluids, pesticides, or sewage into potable water systems.
